  • Failure Is Not An Option A Flight Control History of NASA

Based on NASA flight director Gene Kranz' autobiography "Failure is not an Option" this documentary traces the history of NASA Mission Control during the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs, with special emphasis on Apollo 1, 8, 11, 12 and 13. While Kranz' book often comes out as overly jingoistic and with an excess of pathos, this documentary strikes a good balance between depicting the historical background of the space race, the technical issues of spaceflight and the emotional impact on Mission Control personnel. To people very familiar with the events of US manned spaceflight in those years, there is not much new information to be gained from the documentary. There is Conrads difficult Gemini spacewalk, the Apollo 1 fire, Apollo 8 going around the moon, the Apollo 11 moon descent cr...

There is Conrads difficult Gemini spacewalk, the Apollo 1 fire, Apollo 8 going around the moon, the Apollo 11 moon descent crises (Computer alarm and low fuel), Mission Controller Aarons reset of the Apollo 12 during launch and of course the whole saga of Apollo 13. All is told through the eyes of Mission Control, its directors and controllers, with the astronauts only appearing as fuzzy voices on the radio downlink. The strength of the documentary is that it shows us the faces and voices of the Mission controllers. From the perspective of 2003 they re-tell their stories in a seamless narrative illustrated with mostly original film, but also a little re-enactment, which happily is not too intrusive (even though it does show people watching a Mercury launch in colour on their home TV set..). The contrast between the young faces filmed in the 60's and the present-day aged and haughty demeanor of the same men is a captivating reminder of the passage of time. Working in Mission control was obviously the high point of their lives, so there is a slightly nostalgic note to their account. Some things about the documentary can be criticized. Space buffs will miss technical details, and not much is being said about the system of shifts in Mission Control, that is, how "colourcoded" teams managed the job of mission control 24/7. Also, the focus is very much on the telegenic Gene Kranz, to the detriment of the other mission directors and controllers. This is probably unavoidable when we're dealing with the TV medium, which needs easy-to-follow stories and a captivating protagonist. If one wants a true insight into NASA mission control, one has to read books about it. This documentary will however serve as a primer, and a good one at that. It is emotional to hear the story of NASA's crises and triumphs, re-told 40 years on by the men who were actually there. They might not quite be unsung heroes, since their feats are well-documented, but they certainly deserve to be heard once more by new audiences.

Visit http://www.FlywithB.com for the complete flight training course. Flight School - Airspace The flight training video course available at http://www.FlywithB.com is a comprehensive aviation training video designed to help those interested in learning how to fly, student pilots and private pilots. In the course certified flight instructor Brendan Quinn-Narkin takes you step by step through the process of planning a flight and then flying in a Cessna 172 through congested airspace. If you are interested in becoming a pilot and thinking about attending a flight school, this is a great way to get started. If you are a student pilot working on your private pilot license, this is a great way to prepare for your next flying lesson. If you are a private pilot this video course can help you prepare for your next flight review. The flight training video starts out in disc 1 with all of the detailed flight planning involved for a flight from the Reid-Hillview airport in San Jose, CA to the Half Moon Bay Airport which is on the Pacific coast, just South of San Francisco. The preflight planning involves gathering information from aeronautical charts and the airport facility directory. Important airport information is collected from the terminal chart including: radio communication frequencies, field elevation and runway information. There is a review of the airspace along the route. This flight involves flying in class D, C and possibly class B airspace. Your flight instructor shows you how to identify different types of airspace on aeronautical charts and goes over the rules for each class of airspace with you. Next, using the Cessna 172 POH (pilots operating handbook) your flight instructor shows you how to calculate takeoff and landing distance and how to perform a weight and balance calculation. Now it's time to learn more about aviation weather. Your flight instructor puts his phone on speakerphone as he calls a flight service station for a standard weather briefing. Now it's almost time to go flying but first, this flight involves flying in some complicated and congested airspace so your flight instructor provides you with a radio communication tutorial in which he provides you with techniques to ensure that you sound like a professional on the radio. Next we head out to the airplane and take a look at the Cessna 172 which we will be flying. This starts out with sitting in the cockpit and going over all of the Cessna 172 cockpit instruments. The cockpit tutorial if followed by a demonstration of how to perform a preflight inspection and that concludes disc 1 of the course. Disc 2 includes the entire flight from Reid-Hillview to Half Moon Bay. This includes the taxi, run-up, takeoff, cruise, descent and landing. The camera follows the flight instructors every move so that you see exactly how to fly a plane. You also get to hear all of the radio communication with Air Traffic Control. This provides you with dozens upon dozens of examples of how to sound professional on the radio. For disc 3 we get back into the Cessna 172 and fly back to the Reid-Hillview airport. Once again you get to hear all of the radio communication including requesting flight following. The flight takes us directly over Stanford University and we fly directly over the San Jose airport (SJC) while looking down at airline jets below us. As you land back at RHV your flight instructor talks you through his process for an ultra smooth landing. Go to http://www.FlywithB.com for more info and to watch additional sample videos.

Houston, Texas February 1, 2003 (NASA TV - Access All) 1. Shuttle tracking on screen 2. UPSOUND Flight Director "Everything look good to you? Control and right seems normal right?" 3. UPSOUND Flight Control "Control has been stable through the rolls that we've ..." 4. UPSOUND Flight Director "Go ahead Max" 5. UPSOUND Flight Control "FYI I've just lost four seperate temperature transducers on the left side of the vehicle. The hydraulic return temperatures." Houston, Texas February 14, 2003 6. SOUNDBITE (English) Leroy Cain Flight Director "From the very first indications that we had of the hydraulic return temperature indications failed, that gave me pause. There were several smaller events leading up to the loss of signal where I became increasingly concerned given that most of the activity in the sensors that were failed and the like was on the left wing. So there was som increasing concern." Houston, Texas February 1, 2003 (NASA TV - Access All) 7. UPSOUND Flight Director "Columbia Houston com check" Houston, Texas February 14, 2003 8. SOUNDBITE (English) Leroy Cain Flight Director "We had recieved some unconfirmed information based on some sightings and when I put that information with the known events that we already had it gave me great puase." Houston, Texas February 1, 2003 (NASA TV - Access All) 9. UPSOUND Flight Director "TC Flight, lock the doors." Houston, Texas February 14, 2003 10. SOUNDBITE (English) Leroy Cain Flight Director "The first time I thought about that was the very first call from the mechanical systems officer, from Max, that said that flight max had lost four hydraulic return temperature indications." Houston, Texas February 1, 2003 (NASA TV - Access All) 11. Flight Controller crying 12. Video screen of telemetry STORYLINE: The Columbia investigation board is trying to zero in on what caused the hole in the shuttle's aluminum skin that apparently allowed super-hot gases to penetrate the wing and destroy the spacecraft. The investigators have said that a gash or some other kind of breach probably doomed the spacecraft. The board is analyzing various possible causes for the breach. One possibility, raised from the very start of the investigation, is that the shuttle was damaged by a hard piece of foam insulation that fell off the external fuel tank during liftoff. On Friday, flight director Leroy Cain said that the foam debris immediately came to mind on Feb. 1 during the shuttle's final moments when he was first told of sensors breaking down in the spacecraft's left wing as it glided toward home. "That gave me pause. That was the first time I had thought about that debris hit we took on ascent," Cain said. But he said that when he learned about the sensor readings, he did not imagine that it would spell the end for the shuttle and its crew: "I did not think that we would lose it." One by one, sensors embedded throughout Columbia's left wing began recording unusual readings as the shuttle approached the California coast on Feb. 1. The precise meaning of those readings was not immediately clear to Mission Control, Cain said. The wings have only a few sensors, not enough to confirm in real time whether the landing gear hatch had come open or had been breached to allow the superheated gases, called plasma, to penetrate the wing, he added. Seven minutes after the first indication of a problem, Columbia broke up in the sky over Texas, killing its crew of seven. In Mission Control, it took minutes for the flight team to realize what had happened to Columbia. It was reports from the field, including TV images, that confirmed for the flight team that the mission had ended in disaster, Cain said. Flight of UFO Taken from album: Directory 'Human' Delete Band: Cyber Baphomet Country: Russia (Stavropol, Stavropol Krai) Genre: Electronic Black Metal, Lyrical theme (s): Space, Darkness, Technology, Sci-Fi, Future, Destruction, End of Mankind, Apocalypse Cyber Baphomet technically is Electronic Black Metal (85% Electronics, 10% Black Metal elements and 5% Ambient), whose members are Sadist, Teknoise and GXfff (all from Baal Zebuth) a project born in Russia. This band its sounds is very synthetic due to the use of many electronic elements, programmed sounds only, except the voice; The guitar is absent therefore are only nuances of electronic music in the scales as would possibly listened within black metal. In its two releases (Cyber Baphomet and Directory 'Human' Delete) its sound is so to speak "mellow highly evocative industrial post-apocalyptic soundscapes" gives an idea about destruction in a future not far away with a fictitious sequence into human disease. Black metal or not some people could are interested in this band, although I would not recommend to anyone. Directory 'Human' Delete still is available to purchase. black/industrial, ebm, industrial or simply Cyber Baphomet whose architecture may also seduce the chaos and darkness.
